A certified pre-owned Ford vehicle has passed a manufacturer-defined eligibility check and inspection and comes with program benefits backed by Ford. A standard used vehicle is sold on its own condition and history, along with any coverage that may remain. Ford Blue Advantage is the Ford program that handles this certification. For Woodland Hills buyers, the choice depends on how much documented peace of mind you want compared with how much flexibility you want in age, mileage, and budget.
What “certified pre-owned” actually means
Two vehicles of the same model and similar mileage can sit side by side on a lot and still be very different purchases. The difference is what happened before they were listed. A certified pre-owned vehicle has been checked against a written standard set by the manufacturer, not only by the selling dealership. It has to meet eligibility rules to enter the program, pass a detailed inspection, and be reconditioned anywhere it falls short. Once certified, it carries benefits defined by the program itself.
That last part is what matters most to shoppers. Certification turns “this car looks good” into “this car met a published standard, and here is the paperwork that shows it.”
What counts as a used vehicle
A used vehicle has had at least one previous owner and is not part of a certification program. That is not a warning label. Many good vehicles are sold as used every day, including ones that are too old or have too many miles to qualify for certification.
With a used vehicle, your confidence comes from what you can verify yourself. That includes the vehicle history report, the service records, an inspection, a thorough test drive, and any factory coverage that may remain from when the vehicle was new. More of the homework falls to you, and the range of choices is usually wider. You can browse our full used inventory to see the spread.
Ford Blue Advantage: three levels, not one
Ford Blue Advantage is the certified pre-owned program from Ford, and it runs three certification levels rather than one. Knowing which level a vehicle carries is the single most useful thing you can learn from a listing.
Gold Certified
The top tier, and Ford models only. Vehicles must be no more than 6 model years old with under 80,000 miles, and each passes a 172-point inspection by factory-trained technicians.
Gold brings a 12-month/12,000-mile Comprehensive Limited Warranty covering more than 1,000 components, plus a fully transferable 7-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty measured from the original in-service date. Gold vehicles also earn 22,000 FordPass Rewards Points.
Blue Certified
The broader tier, and this is the part most shoppers miss: Blue Certified is not limited to Ford vehicles. Other makes and models can qualify if they meet the age, mileage, inspection and history requirements. Vehicles must be less than 10 years old within the program mileage limit, and each passes a 139-point inspection.
Blue brings a 90-day/4,000-mile Comprehensive Limited Warranty and 11,000 FordPass Rewards Points.
EV Certified
For Ford’s fully electric vehicles. Each passes a 127-point inspection and carries a 12-month/12,000-mile Comprehensive Limited Warranty plus 8-year/100,000-mile BaseCARE EV Limited Warranty coverage.
Every Blue Advantage vehicle, whatever the level, includes a 14-day/1,000-mile Money Back Guarantee, complimentary 24/7 Ford Roadside Assistance, and FordPass Rewards Points eligibility.
Ford Blue Advantage does not make every pre-owned Ford vehicle certified. A Ford vehicle sold outside the program is a used vehicle, even if it is in excellent shape. Certification reflects the process the vehicle went through, not the badge on the grille. You can see what is currently certified in our Ford Certified inventory.
CPO vs. used: the differences that matter day to day
- Inspection standard. Certified: a manufacturer-defined checklist of 172, 139 or 127 points depending on the level. Used: whatever inspection the seller performed, plus any independent inspection you arrange.
- Reconditioning. Certified: items that fall short of the standard are addressed before certification. Used: condition varies from vehicle to vehicle.
- Coverage. Certified: program benefits defined by Ford, with written terms you can read before you sign. Used: any remaining factory coverage, plus any protection you choose to add.
- Eligibility. Certified: limited to vehicles that meet the program rules. Used: no program limits, so you get a wider spread of years and miles.
- Price. Certified vehicles often cost more than comparable non-certified ones because of the inspection, reconditioning, and coverage. Used vehicles can stretch a budget further, with more of the risk resting on the buyer. Our vehicles priced under thirty thousand dollars are a practical place to start if budget leads.
Who each option fits
A certified Ford vehicle tends to suit drivers who want fewer unknowns. Certification is worth serious consideration if your routine includes a long Ventura Freeway commute, if you are buying a household’s primary vehicle, or if you prefer predictable ownership.
A used vehicle tends to suit buyers who value flexibility. If you want an older model, a configuration that is hard to find certified, or the most vehicle for your budget, a carefully inspected used vehicle can be a smart buy. Neither path is automatically better. Each one answers a different question.
Worth knowing either way: vehicles purchased here are also eligible for Galpin’s Exclusive Warranty Program, a 10-year or 100,000-mile limited warranty from the date of purchase, with a deductible per covered repair visit and maintenance requirements that our team can walk you through.
How to compare a certified and a used vehicle side by side
These steps keep the comparison honest, whichever way you lean:
- Ask which certification level it carries. Gold, Blue and EV Certified bring very different coverage, so start here before anything else.
- Read the vehicle history report. Check the ownership count, any reported accidents, and the title status for both vehicles.
- Ask for the inspection results. For a certified vehicle, request the completed inspection checklist. For a used vehicle, ask what was checked and consider an independent inspection.
- Get coverage in writing. Compare the certified benefits summary with any remaining factory coverage on the used vehicle. Note what is covered, for how long, and whether coverage transfers if you sell.
- Review the service records. A record of regular maintenance is a good sign on any pre-owned vehicle.
- Test drive on roads you know. Drive the hills, surface streets, and freeway stretches you use every day. Listen for noises, feel the brakes, and try every feature you plan to use.
- Weigh the whole picture. Consider price alongside coverage, condition, and how long you plan to keep the vehicle. You can value your trade and apply for financing before you visit so the numbers come together in one conversation.
Frequently asked questions
Is a certified pre-owned Ford worth it compared with a regular used one?
A certified vehicle is worth it if documented condition and program coverage matter to you. Certified vehicles meet a Ford-defined inspection standard and come with written program benefits, which reduces unknowns. A used vehicle can offer more flexibility and value if you are comfortable doing more of the verification yourself.
What is the difference between Gold Certified and Blue Certified?
Gold covers Ford models up to 6 years old with under 80,000 miles, uses a 172-point inspection, and carries a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty plus a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Blue covers vehicles less than 10 years old, accepts other makes and models, uses a 139-point inspection, and carries a 90-day/4,000-mile comprehensive warranty.
Can a non-Ford vehicle be certified through Ford Blue Advantage?
Yes, at the Blue Certified level, provided it meets the age, mileage, inspection and vehicle-history requirements. Gold Certified is limited to Ford models.
Is there a certification level for electric vehicles?
Yes. EV Certified uses a 127-point inspection and includes a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty plus 8-year/100,000-mile BaseCARE EV Limited Warranty coverage.
Is every pre-owned Ford vehicle at a Ford dealership certified?
No. A vehicle is certified only if it meets the program eligibility rules and passes the required inspection. Ford vehicles sold outside the program are used vehicles, even when they are in excellent condition.
Can a used vehicle still have factory warranty coverage?
Sometimes, yes. A used vehicle may still carry part of its original new-vehicle coverage, depending on its age, its mileage, and the manufacturer terms. Ask for the details in writing and compare them with the certified benefits on any vehicle you are considering.
